It is a big decision to bring your child/teenager to a professional therapist for counseling, and it is important that your choice of therapist include someone highly trained in treating children of a separated or divorcing family. Cognitive Behavioral Play has been recognized as important since the time of Plato (429-347 B.C.) who reportedly observed, “you can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”.
Dr. Levin is a Past President of the Association for Play Therapy in New Jersey. Play Therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods including cognitive/ behavioral, all of which make use of one or more of the natural benefits of play. Play therapy differs from regular play in that children are helped to systematically address and resolve their problems. Since play is fun, it makes it easier for children/teens to confront what is bothering them.
In Dr. Levin’s clinical practice, he asks the parents which activities the child enjoys and emphasizes these activities in sessions so the child has a fun, productive experience. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD often overlap and it takes an expert to make a firm diagnosis. Children are very egocentric and they often blame themselves for a marriage unraveling. For preschool, kindergarten and elementary school children, Dr. Levin firmly believes in the quote “play is the child’s talk and toys are the words.” He has given lectures entitled “Big Kids Play Too” which emphasizes that even teens enjoy a fun age appropriate counseling experience. Dr. Levin has had hundreds of teens who walk into his office that first time very angry, once they are engaged in treatment and realize he is there to help, then that anger melts away and they are ready to talk about their lives.
